Dave Herz

Admissions & Outreach | Founder

Dave (he/him) has been a pioneer in community-based support for teens, young adults, and their families for over 25 years. With a background in education and psychotherapy, Dave began his career as a high school teacher at a small alternative high school in Boulder, CO rooted in connection and mutual respect between students and staff. That spirit of authentic relationship-building has guided his work ever since.

In 1998, Dave became the very first hire at one of the country’s earliest residential transition programs for young men ages 18–25. There, he discovered a deep passion for mentoring emerging adults and supporting families navigating complex transitions.

In 2000, Dave founded Confident Living, a groundbreaking non-residential program for teens and young adults returning home from treatment—well before this model existed in the broader field. This program later became Vive Family Support Program, which under Dave’s leadership expanded to nine cities nationwide. His work laid the foundation for much of what is now considered best practice in aftercare and wraparound support.

After helping lead and grow another young adult program, Dave felt the pull to return to what he loved most—building something of his own. He reconnected with two former colleagues to co-found Wonder, combining decades of experience with a renewed focus on creativity, flexibility, and deep family engagement.

Originally from Highland Park, IL, Dave is a lifelong Cubs fan, dedicated husband of 38 years, and proud dad to twin boys and a daughter. He’s also an avid walker and self-proclaimed foodie who enjoys trekking seven miles into town from his home—always moving forward, just like the families he supports.
