John Kopish, MA
John believes that meaningful therapy begins with genuine connection. He is passionate about creating a warm, supportive, and nonjudgmental space where children, teens, young adults, and families feel heard, understood, and empowered to navigate life's challenges. His goal is to build trusting relationships that allow clients to recognize their strengths, develop practical coping skills, and create lasting, meaningful change.
John earned his Master's degree in Clinical Psychology and has worked with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families across a variety of clinical and community settings. His experience includes conducting psychological assessments for children and adolescents, facilitating group therapy in inpatient hospitals, and providing individual, couples, and family therapy in outpatient care. Prior to becoming a clinician, he worked as an Honors College tutor, summer camp counselor, and longtime caregiver, experiences that strengthened his ability to adapt to each person's unique learning style and needs while building supportive, lasting relationships.
John was drawn to the mental health field by a desire to help reduce the stigma surrounding therapy, particularly within communities where seeking support is often misunderstood or discouraged. As someone who understands the pressure many people feel to suppress emotions or "stay strong," he strives to create an environment where clients can show up authentically without fear of judgment. At Wonder, he values the organization's collaborative, family-centered approach and believes that lasting progress comes from working together to support the whole family system.
John primarily utilizes Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) while integrating strengths-based and trauma-informed care. He also incorporates techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Narrative Therapy, Art Therapy, and other evidence-based approaches to tailor treatment to each client's unique needs. His clinical interests include trauma, anxiety, depression, ADHD, OCD, learning differences, grief and loss, identity development, substance use, eating concerns, and behavioral challenges. He especially enjoys helping clients recognize the strengths they already possess and use those strengths to navigate life's obstacles with greater confidence.
Outside of work, John enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling with his girlfriend, trying new restaurants, taking cooking and scent-making classes, playing beach volleyball, singing karaoke, baking, and spending time on the water. He brings the same curiosity, warmth, and sense of humor into his work that he values in his personal life, helping clients feel comfortable, supported, and genuinely understood throughout their therapeutic journey.
